The MTHFR gene encodes the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase which intervenes in the folate and homocysteine metabolism. Since this enzyme participates in various metabolic pathways, it has been linked to different processes related to thrombosis, spina bifida, cancer, and other defects in the closure of the neural tube. Patients who have a homozygous genetic state for this gene and present hyperhomocysteinemia and folate deficiency have a risk factor for developing venous thrombosis.
